Synopsis

Ten bodies and a rhythm that doesn’t let up. In SWEAT (anthem) the Finnish choreographer Milla Koistinen transforms sporting endurance into a silent and powerful form of resistance. The audience sit facing each other like at a tennis match – with an ensemble in the middle, running clockwise round the edges of the court long before they consciously look at each other.

Amid the tension, release and playfulness, a choreography unfolds that gives exhaustion, vulnerability and tenacity visible form: with audible breathing, touch and bodies cowering before sudden outbursts of speed. Here perseverance becomes a political stance – not breaking boundaries but staying within them together when our bodies are demanding rest.

For this piece the internationally acclaimed Dance On Ensemble, which consists of experienced dancers over the age of 40, has been supplemented by four young guest dancers. This intergenerational ensemble celebrates the power of a collective that is marked by both difference and solidarity. Energy that never appears staged, but which comes from collective persistence.

There will be moments of loud sounds, blinking and flickering lights (no stroboscope) are used during the performance and there will be a moment of complete darkness.
