Forum Tanzvermittlung: Zwischen Zumutung und Zumutbarem

In recent years, choreographers, organizers, and mediators have become much more sensitive to the unique perspectives and needs of children and young people as an audience for dance and performance. Pieces developed specifically for young audiences attempt to address their specific needs while also inspiring, challenging, and taking them seriously.
But what about those productions that were not explicitly designed for young audiences and deal with topics such as war, violence, or nudity? Should these works be excluded—or should they be used to engage in dialogue with young people?
Based on various works in the program of the Rhein-Main Dance Festival 2025, such as What Is War by Eiko Otake and Wen Hui, the Dance Education Forum addresses the question of whether and how young people can be introduced to challenging pieces and themes in contemporary dance. What methodological approaches make sense? What needs to be considered when dealing with the different perspectives of those involved – the young people themselves, their teachers, and their families? How can cultural, religious, political, and psychological aspects be navigated in such a way that dialogue and communication are successful – without losing contact with the target group?

How can contemporary dance that addresses challenging topics such as war, violence, or nudity be made accessible to young audiences — even when the pieces were not explicitly created for them? Taking the Tanzfestival piece What Is War as a starting point, the Forum Tanzvermittlung explores meaningful methods and approaches for engaging with the diverse perspectives of young people, families, and educators.
