Why offer a format like the Choreographic Workshop?

Bruno Heynderickx:
The format is intended for emerging choreographers who are just beginning to develop their own work, as well as for more experienced artists who are working on something new. It gives them a chance to present segments of an unfinished project to a live audience.

Anna Wagner:
We believe it’s valuable to share work at certain stages of its development with an audience. On the one hand, artists receive early feedback; on the other, the workshop creates an environment where artists presenting their work can also exchange ideas with each other.

What does the process of the Choreographic Workshop look like?

Bruno:
Applicants send us a brief description of the project they are currently working on. We review the submissions and select three artists, who are then invited to present a 15–20 minute excerpt on stage in Darmstadt, Wiesbaden, or Frankfurt. After each presentation, we moderate a conversation between the artists and the audience about what was shown.

What are the benefits for choreographers? Why apply?

Anna:
It’s an opportunity to present your work at an early stage and begin thinking about its impact and potential audiences. Choreographers often work in isolation and only receive feedback from close colleagues. We invite artists to step out of that isolation and share their ideas in a safe and supportive environment.

The workshop is also a valuable chance to connect with the team at Tanzplattform Rhein-Main. We’re always excited to encounter a wide range of artistic approaches and to initiate new conversations with dance artists across the region.
