Synopsis
Why do some people feel at home in water while others never entirely trust it? In her new solo YOU CANNOT CAN the Canadian choreographer and performer Dana Michel embarks on a search for a personal answer. Although her family comes from an island that is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, for her swimming remains something that, even now, she cannot take for granted. In a swimming pool, surrounded by the audience, she presents an idiosyncratic performance about fear, memory and freedom.
Based on her own story, Michel examines the social and economic conditions that determine our access to water. Who learns to swim? Who feels safe doing so? And what does our relationship with water reveal about our confidence and heritage? Playful, vulnerable and with a dry sense of humour, she probes the possibility of letting go of her fears. YOU CANNOT CAN is a performative adventure that regards the body as a repository of experience and turns water into a place where individual stories and global maritime history meet.
