Synopsis
Three dancers meet on a mirrored podium in the middle of the audience. Their movements alternate between the harshness of martial arts and the flowing grace of underwater ballet – in a test of strength that gets under your skin. Fragmented beats and lines of Azzlack rap pervade the space and knock familiar codes into uncertainty.
Strike, the new piece by Frankfurt director and choreographer Simon Möllendorf and his company Dorfproduct, examines racialised images of masculinity: the violence attributed to these bodies and the violence inflicted on them – through gazes, framings and value judgements. Sensual and stirring, the performance offers direct experience of categorisation, resistance and refusal, and asks what a strike by these bodies might mean. A choreography that readjusts our perceptions.
