The Sea Within, the latest work by this year’s spotlight artist Lisbeth Gruwez, is a magnetizing dance performance. In it, the Belgian choreographer discovers chaos as its own creative power and takes on a perspective that at first glance seems to contradict her work method of the past few years. In many pieces, Gruwez explores individual bodies in extasy and creates instructions for moments in which motoric functions go out of control. In The Sea Within, the foreground is not just filled with individuals, but rather with the dissolution of borders between bodies. In a clear and intense style that is characteristic of Lisbeth Gruwez, the choreographer creates a contemporary ritual in which the ‘we’ embraces the ‘I’ and ten dancers dissolve in a grand breathing landscape.
