The neologism “Sonoma” from the Greek “soma” (body) and the Latin “sonum” (sound) refers to “bodies of sound”. It could be the sound of the body when it falls, or the cry that arises from its primitive howling. In the indigenous language of native Californians, "Sonoma" means "valley of the moon”. According to myth, the moon nestles on its plains every night. There, the calls, the cries and the beating of drums form a hypnotic pulse, like that of a lullaby.
In Sonoma, Marcos Morau and his company La Veronal adapt key concepts from his earlier piece Le Surréalisme au Service de la Révolution, which was created in 2016 at the Ballet de Lorraine. Inspired by Luis Buñuel, Morau and La Veronal listen on a journey between sleep and fiction to the sound of the abyss that opens when imagination, unlike humanity, is free.
