The neologism Sonoma from the Greek "soma" (body) and the Latin "sonum" (sound) refers to "bodies of sound". It could be the sound of the body when it falls, or the cry that arises from its primitive howling. In the indigenous language of native Californians, "Sonoma" means "valley of the moon. According to myth, the moon nestles on its plains every night. There, the calls, the cries and the beating of drums form a hypnotic pulse, like that of a lullaby.
In Sonoma, Marcos Morau and his company La Veronal adapt key concepts of his earlier piece "Le Surréalisme au Service de la Révolution", which was created in 2016 at the Ballet de Lorraine. The piece traced the life of Luis Buñuel between his upbringing in medieval Calanda and his later career in cosmopolitan Paris and described the tension in his development between Jesuit discipline and surreal freedom.
Sonoma is born of the necessity to return to the origins of the body, to its flesh. On this journey between sleep and fiction, humanity is lost and encounters the extraordinary.
Inspired by Buñuel, La Veronal listens to the sound of the abyss that opens when imagination, unlike humanity, is free.
