Small Talk after the performance

Staatstheater Darmstadt - Kammerspiele

approx. 50 Minutes

Four women stare at us. Their bodies are lined up at a long table; their hair fixated with sickles and axes. It is an ambiguous scene that reminds us of a Middle Age torture chamber. But instead of the expected gestures of suffering, the quartet of women begin singing with passion. They laugh polyphonically, dance blindly, and chat cacophonously. Muyte Maker celebrates four disobedient bodies – in a constant state of metamorphosis – that withdraw themselves from standard ideas of femininity. Flora Détraz, the creator of this humorous work, was educated in Lisbon and France and, in addition to her work as dancer for choreographers such as Marlene Monteiro Freitas, has been developing her own pieces since 2013. In Muyte Maker, she continues her research into the voice beyond its functionalism. Détraz presents a grotesque hymn to joy that – recalcitrant and full of creative potential – resists rules of decency and morality.
