Viennese choreographer and performance artist Doris Uhlich, in the spotlight of this year's dance festival, is probably best known for dance pieces brimming with participatory energy. In Every Body Electric, she and six physically disabled performers celebrate individual and collective "dance forms of energy” that arise from personal rhythms, dynamics, beats and physical characteristics. What other possibilities open up when machines – such as wheelchairs, prostheses, crutches – are not seen as obstacles, but regarded and staged as extensions of the body?! Simply and radically, the Austrian choreographer literally moves dance potential beyond conventional views and opinions on and about dance – to astound us with the explosive power, but also gentle, forceful poetry of extraordinary choreography.
