Der Nussknacker is one of the world’s most popular story ballets. The focus of the new version of this ballet classic, which Tim Plegge creates for the Hessische Staatsballett, is the story of Marie, who is given a nutcracker as a present on Christmas Eve. She takes it with her on trips through the sugar land, through hopes, wishes and dreams in which the contours between daily life and projections become blurry. Marie begins to believe that she can find what she thinks she misses the most in the dream world, at least until everything also becomes unbalanced here as well. In Plegge’s version, in which fairy-tale elements and the daily life of bare-bones family Christmases intertwine, the story’s dark and bizarre aspects also have their place.
