What is the origin of dance? In RING the Finnish choreographer Jenna Jalonen reduces a series of dance traditions to their lowest common denominator: the circle. Together with seven dancers she explores the power and symbolism of circular formations across rituals, clubs, ceremonies and contemporary choreography. The circle as a collective structure is found all over the globe: in traditional ring dances, battle situations from street and club styles and in spiritual ceremonies. In all these dances, relations are put to the test – between bodies, times and worlds. Jalonen adopts a transformative rather than museum-like approach to these old formations: she takes these popular dance practices, weaves them together and the result is something entirely new: a community moving between traditional and pop culture, constantly changing in form and passing its rhythm on to the audience. RING is a homage to dance history and a powerfully energised space in the here and now – sustained by an entrancing soundtrack and pure physical presence. In invitation to remind ourselves of the transformative, cathartic power of dance – and to experience it afresh collectively.
